Thursday, July 21, 2011

AHMAD Shafiq Mat Razali from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Hjh Maidah Hj Abdul Rahman from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) won the Asean Inter-Varsity Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran 2011 held at the UBD Chancellor Hall, in their respective categories.

Ahmad Shafiq who is currently pursuing a degree in Islamic and Arabic Studies scored 92.75 percent beating eight other qari (male Quran reader) in the category.

Ahmad Shafiq, who actively participates in Quran competitions in UKM, commented that the level of Quran reading among the participants was very good.

"I did not expect (to win the competition). I came here to present my best al-Quran reading. It does not matter if I became champion or not. I did not count on it, but with this result Alhamdulillah (praise to Allah SWT)," he said.

He shared some tips on how to prevent nervousness when participating in Quran reading competitions: "Do not treat the competition just for winning it. What we want to do is to give the audience our best al-Quran reading".

He also expressed his gratitude to his teachers, Al Fadhil Ustaz Wan Hilmi Wan Abdullah from UKM , who had trained him for two months, and the late Ustaz Muzdi Awang who helped him develop his interest in learning Quran in the Tarannum style (reading the Quran with a melody).

Hjh Maidah Hj Abdul Rahman, a student taking Bachelor of Islamic Education Studies said the reading of Quran must be made a culture and practice, not only by Quran competition participants, but by all, in line with the desire to be a "Zikir Nation".

The qariah (female Quran reader) from Universiti Brunei Darussalam added that this is so that Brunei will reverberate with Zikrullah (remembering Allah SWT through zikir) and protected from any disasters.

"Let us continue to enrich our country, Brunei, with Kalamullah (words of Allah SWT). Hopefully, the nation's peace and prosperity will continue," she said.

She commented that youth are the catalyst towards this (achieving the Zikir Nation).

"The number of youth participation in al-Quran competition has increased over the years and this is encouraging," she added.

Second place for the qari category went to Ak Muhd Amirul Aiman Pg Hj Marjuki, a Bachelor of Religious Teaching (Usuluddin) student from Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (Kupu SB).

Universiti Malaya's qari, Muhammad Nasir Mohamad Saleh scored 88.25 per cent placing him in the third place.

For the qariah category, Universiti Malaya's qariah, Nor Fizah Panut, placed second with a score of 86.5 percent.

Meanwhile, Norhafshah Pehin Khatib Hj Mustafa from UBD scored 83.75 per cent and bagged the third place.

The Asean Inter-Varsity Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran 2011 was officially open on Tuesday. The two-day event aimed to serve as a continuation of the Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran between Asean universities that was organised by UBD in 1998.

This year, four universities from Malaysia, namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sabah sent six representatives.

Brunei is represented by nine participants coming from UBD, Universiti Sultan Sharif Ali (Unissa), Seri Begawan Religious Teachers College (Kupu SB) and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB).
